Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) and tinnitus are among the most common injuries affecting the UK Armed Forces community.

A “Hidden Epidemic”

Research highlights that veterans are significantly more likely to experience hearing issues than the general population. It is estimated that approximately 300,000 ex-service personnel in the UK currently suffer from hearing loss. Statistics show that veterans are:

  • • 2.33x More Likely to experience hearing loss than non-veterans.
  • • 1.6x More Likely to experience tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
“Personnel who deployed on operational tours are nearly twice as likely to suffer from hearing loss compared to those who did not.”

High-Decibel Environments

Unlike civilian workplaces where noise regulations are strictly enforced, military service members operate in environments where extreme noise is frequent. Damaging noise levels include:

  • Gunfire & Artillery: Reaching levels up to 190 dB.
  • Engines: Constant exposure to high-output aircraft and naval engines.
  • Explosive Blasts: Sudden, intense pressure from mortars or grenades that can rupture eardrums instantly.

The Long-Term Impact

While hearing loss typically increases with age, veterans often experience moderate to severe issues at a much younger age due to service-related trauma. Many report that ear protection was often uncomfortable or hindered situational awareness, leading to damage that often only becomes fully apparent years after discharge.
